The Basic Firefighter program area prepares students to meet the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) minimum standards for employment as a firefighter in the State of Texas. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to pursue certification and entry-level positions in the fire service, with coursework that may also apply toward an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Fire Science/Firefighting.

The Basic Peace Officer Licensing program area prepares students for a career as a Texas Peace Officer by providing the required training and knowledge needed for entry into law enforcement. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the state licensing examination administered by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

The Commercial Truck Driver program area prepares students for entry-level careers in the trucking and transportation industry by providing training for both Class A and Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) requirements in Texas. Students receive instruction in CDL exam preparation, general truck driving skills, and hands-on driving practice coordinated with Department of Transportation standards, equipping them to safely operate commercial vehicles and successfully complete the CDL licensing process.

Launch your career in the trucking industry with comprehensive Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training designed to prepare students for success on the road. Our program provides an overview of Class B CDL written examinations, including focused preparation to help students confidently pass the CDL licensing test. Students gain essential truck driving knowledge, hands-on driving experience, and practical safety skills through guided instruction aligned with Department of Transportation standards.

The Criminal Justice program or Police Academy at Houston CIty College consists of the AA transfer plan for Criminal Justice, the AAS in Criminal Justice with concentrations in law enforcement, corrections, or juvenile justice, and the following certificate: Basic Peace Officer Licensing. Texas requires a four-year degree to qualify as a probation officer or protective service worker. Students must be 21 or older to enter the police academy.

The Electronics Engineering Technology program at Houston City College prepares students for technical careers by offering focused specializations in Biomedical Engineering Technology or Computer Engineering Technology. The Health, Safety, and Environment program area provides students with knowledge of safety regulations and practices used to protect workers and the public from safety, health, and environmental hazards in process industries. Students learn about government-enforced regulations and the proper handling of equipment and substances used in industries such as oil and gas, power generation, water and wastewater, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and pulp and paper.

The Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Technology program at Houston City College provides high-quality education and hands-on training in modern instrumentation and control systems. The curriculum equips students with the technical knowledge, safety awareness, and operational skills needed to work effectively in refining, petrochemical, power generation, and manufacturing environments.

The Public Safety Telecommunicator – 911 Dispatcher program prepares students for careers in emergency communications and public safety support services. Students receive academic instruction and hands-on training in radio operations, emergency call-taking, dispatch procedures, incident documentation, and communication skills for Law Enforcement, Fire, and EMS agencies. Approved by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), the program prepares students for the Basic Telecommunicator Licensing Exam and entry-level employment in emergency dispatching and public safety communications.

The Roustabout Drilling Technician (RigOne) Program prepares students for entry-level careers in the oil and gas drilling industry through technical instruction and hands-on training designed by drilling contractors. The program focuses on developing skilled, safety-conscious, and promotable rig crew members by teaching drilling operations, equipment handling, workplace safety, and industry best practices.
