The Intensive English program area helps college students and adult learners develop English language skills for work, academic studies in the United States, and Houston City College certificate programs. The program offers Intro, Level 1, and Level 2 instruction, preparing students to transition into ESOL Level 3 upon successful completion of Level 2.

The Department of Mathematics at Houston City College provides a strong learning environment for studying mathematics, serving approximately 70 majors and over 11,000 students each semester. Students examine topics such as culture, social institutions, organizations, race and ethnicity, gender, social inequality, technology, deviant and criminal behavior, collective behavior, and social movements. The Multidisciplinary Studies in Studio Art award prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions to complete a baccalaureate degree in art. Studio Art and Art History is the study of visual art and culture. The curriculum focuses on the examination and creation of visual artworks that are informed by wide-ranging concerns, including the formal elements of art and principles of design, technological and social issues and personal expression.

The Music Program at Houston City College prepares students for seamless academic transfer to four-year universities to complete a bachelor’s degree in music. The curriculum builds a strong foundation in music theory, sight-singing and ear training, composition, and ensemble performance. Students also develop their skills through focused study in piano, voice, or instrumental concentrations.
