When Simon Obame came to the United States nearly two years ago from Gabon, his intent was to improve his English and return home to Africa and advance his career in the energy industry. He never intended to stay long in the U.S., but he fell in love with America’s culture and decided to take a huge step and start another degree. With that came the hardest part: leaving everything behind – his family, 12 years of career growth, and a stable life.

Each year, thousands of foodies anticipate the month of August to explore diverse culinary cuisines throughout the city of Houston to please their palates as part of Houston Restaurant Weeks. This year, two longtime chefs were looking forward to the annual event to showcase a curated experience not just for customers, but for student chefs as part of HCC's Culinary Arts program.

HCC Karen Fortune, Ph.D., obtained at $8,000 grant from the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities and the Gates Foundation to support faculty in designing courseware (called Real Chem) to improve student success and decrease DFWs in General Chemistry.

While taking part in HCC’s Interior Design program over the Spring 2025 semester, Reyes applied for the renowned fashion designer company’s Gucci Changemakers Scholarship and was selected as one of just 10 scholarship recipients – the only Gucci Changemaker from a community college.
