The HCC philosophy program provides students opportunities to explore and cultivate open, critical ways to understand the search for truth and to examine the moral implications of thinking and action in an increasingly technologically driven multicultural world.

Sociology explores the many forces that shape human society and everyday life. Students examine topics such as culture, social institutions, organizations, race and ethnicity, gender, social inequality, technology, deviant and criminal behavior, collective behavior, and social movements. Through the study of social interactions and systems, sociology helps students better understand the complexities of communities, relationships, and social change.

The Multidisciplinary Studies in Studio Art award prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions to complete a baccalaureate degree in art. Studio Art and Art History is the study of visual art and culture. The curriculum focuses on the examination and creation of visual artworks that are informed by wide-ranging concerns, including the formal elements of art and principles of design, technological and social issues and personal expression.

The Music Program at Houston City College prepares students for seamless academic transfer to four-year universities to complete a bachelor’s degree in music. The curriculum builds a strong foundation in music theory, sight-singing and ear training, composition, and ensemble performance. Students also develop their skills through focused study in piano, voice, or instrumental concentrations.

The Physics courses at Houston City College support students preparing for science and engineering majors, pursuing physics-related degrees, or simply exploring an interest in how the physical world works. The curriculum builds strong foundations in fundamental principles, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes, exploring how people think, feel, and act. Students examine topics such as learning, memory, perception, development, motivation, personality, stress, mental health, and social behavior. Through this broad curriculum, students gain insight into real-world issues including relationships, prejudice, trauma, workplace behavior, and overall well-being.

The Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) is a state-approved transfer degree that provides the first two years of coursework required for students pursuing Texas teacher certification. This program prepares future educators with foundational knowledge in teaching, learning, and child development and is designed for seamless transfer into a four-year bachelor’s degree leading to initial teacher certification.

The World Language Program at Houston City College offers instruction in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Courses are designed to help students build practical communication skills, cultural understanding, and confidence in using the target language for real-world interactions, academic study, and global engagement.
